Roblox complies with PP Tunas, sets rules for children's game access

Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid announced the gaming platform Roblox has fully complied with the government regulation known as PP Tunas.

The regulation is designed to protect children in the digital space by ensuring platforms implement strict safety and access controls.

According to the minister, Roblox has implemented several game access regulations including the disabling of communication features with unknown users.

The platform now requires age verification using facial recognition technology to ensure users are accessing age appropriate content.

"We appreciate Roblox's commitment to compliance. Roblox has begun implementing age verification for all its users," Hafid said at a press conference on Thursday.

With Roblox now compliant, all eight platforms under the first phase of the regulation have fulfilled the necessary safety requirements.

Hafid said that compliance was achieved after extensive discussions between platform representatives and the Indonesian government.

Those discussions established that Roblox must implement age verification for its entire user base in Indonesia including adult users.

Data shows approximately 23 million child players in Indonesia out of a total of 45 million will be impacted by these new rules.

"We mentioned earlier that there are game restrictions based on age classification. ," the minister explained regarding the different access levels.

She noted that content available to children under 13 will be different from that viewed by teenagers aged 16 and over.

The minister warned that users violating the facial recognition requirements will have their communication features disabled immediately.

To address game addiction, Roblox agreed to provide special settings for parents to limit screen time and manage digital habits. This way, parents can still manage their children's digital habits, especially when accessing the Roblox platform.

Roblox Vice President of Global Public Policy, Nicky Jackson Colaco stated that PP Tunas is an important regulation to protect families in Indonesia, and therefore, the company is fully committed to complying with PP Tunas.

Colaco explained that Roblox regulates game access based on age. After age verification, users under 16 will be directed to create special accounts. Those under 13 will use Roblox Kids, where all chat features are disabled and the experience is designed for children.

Meanwhile, users aged 13–15 will use Roblox Select, which allows limited communication only with known or verified contacts, preventing interaction from strangers.

"Indonesia is clearly one of the leading countries in child safety. We are delighted to serve Indonesia’s dynamic and enthusiastic community, and to provide a positive online space for millions of players to learn, create, and have fun," she remarked.
