Jamie Carragher sums up Liverpool's Mohamed Salah problem perfectly with Lionel Messi comparison

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool may be over-reliant on Mohamed Salah this season, having compared the Reds’ talisman to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Salah has been in sensational form for Liverpool this season, having scored 28 goals and added 19 assists in just 36 games across all competitions ahead of the clash with Wolves on Sunday. His remarkable form has put the Reds on course for the Premier League title, having built a seven-point lead over Arsenal before the weekend, while they are also in contention for the Carabao Cup and Champions League.

The Egyptian has also been talked about as a contender for this year’s Ballon d’Or, which may well depend on whether Liverpool wins some silverware. His form though has led some to suggest Arne Slot’s side has become too reliant on him.

Salah is by far and away the Reds’ biggest supply of goals this season, with Cody Gakpo his nearest challenger with 16 goals and five assists across all competitions. With the 32-year-old’s future still up in the air as his contract nears its expiration, it does leave Liverpool with a concern for the future.

“I suppose it is an over-reliance when someone's having such a good season, that's always going to be the case,” Carragher told Sky Sports ahead of the clash against Wolves.

“He's having one of those seasons where you’d see five or ten years ago, Messi and Ronaldo at Barca and Real Madrid, they were probably over-reliant on those players. You're always going to be with someone who's in such a rich vein of form.”

Liverpool.com says: There’s nothing wrong with having one player who supplies the majority of your goals, as Carragher points out with the Messi and Ronaldo comparisons. The problem comes if Salah decides he wants to leave in the summer, leaving a massive gap in the squad.

You’d hope that without Salah, Liverpool would be able to find plenty of goals regardless, but there’s no doubt the Reds do rely on him. We perhaps won’t know just how heavily until he departs, which hopefully won’t be this summer.
